A third of the area of Abruzzo is protected and it is a marvellous place for nature-watching.
It has three National Parks
(National Park of Gran Sasso-Laga, National Park of Abruzzo and National Park of Maiella),
a regional park (Park of Sirente-Velino) and more than 30 nature reserves and oases.
There is a nature reserve at Lake Penne, which is open all year round and is only 35 minutes from Le Galelle.
In some areas Apennine wolves, Marsican brown bears and lynxes are found, as well as golden eagles at the higher altitudes.
The area is rich in wild flowers, especially wild orchids, and is an excellent place for ornithology.
There are many caves in the Maiella region, the most famous ones being the “Grotta del Cavallone” (Big Horse Cave),
and the “Grotta Nera” (Black Cave). Despite its name, the Grotta Nera consists of two cream-colored chambers, where there are many stalactites and stalagmites
along with smooth parts commonly called Latte di monte (Mountain Milk) which is a very peculiar calcareous formation.
There are many other caves, full of historical evidence from the prehistorical and paleontological era: the “Grotta degli Orsi Volanti”
(The Flying Bears Cave) and the “Grotta del Colle” (Hill Cave), which are both located near the village of Rapino, the “Grotta Caprara” close to
Lama and the “Grotta dei Piccioni” (Pigeons Cave) in the Orta valley.
Whatever your interest, Abruzzo is a real paradise for nature-lovers.
